"If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you."
When starting out on something new, some choose to dip their toes to test the water, others plunge right in. Cyril Joshua, our Associate Engineer with a Diploma in Electrical & Electronic Engineering, is one such person who believes that the only way to learn fast is to perform under pressure. That’s why he made the choice to join SPTel, a challenger in the telco space, to accelerate his pace of growth.
Despite being a fresh graduate, he is already knee deep in his role. His day to day duties include planning of site surveys, monitoring technical proposals, attending inspections and spearheading process improvement.
“I chose to join SPTel because of the opportunity to take on greater responsibility and play a bigger role. As this is my first job, I want to learn as much as I can, as quickly as I can. The fast pace and strong emphasis on innovation at SPTel will enable me to quickly develop my capabilities.”
Besides learning while on the job, Cyril also sees his mentors and team mates as key sources of knowledge and advice.
“A lot of the technology and solutions that SPTel is implementing to deliver a business class digital network is new to me and I wasn’t sure where to begin. Luckily I had encouragement and guidance from those around me and I was able to quickly pick up the necessary skills and knowledge. I am grateful to be in a team that has this sharing mindset and a common vision to do what it takes to complete a job.”
It takes an uncommon individual to be willing to take on such challenges early in his/her career. We asked what drove him to make this choice.
“If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you. Working at SPTel is exciting, because every day I am doing something new or making improvements to what has been done before. I get to meet many people from different teams with varying skill sets. Interlocking with them has led to growth in my interpersonal skills such as communication, management and problem solving during. Best of all, my mentors have a wealth of experience that I can learn from.”
With his dedication, thirst of knowledge and strong team support, Cyril Joshua is certainly off to a good start in his career.
